How to create an account with the IRS

What You Will Need:

To register and use this service, you will need:

  • Your SSN, date of birth, filing status and mailing address from latest tax return
  • Access to your email account
  • Your personal account number from a credit card, mortgage, home equity loan, home equity line of credit or car loan
  • A mobile phone linked to your name (for faster registration) or the ability to receive an activation code by mail

Click the following link or copy and paste it into your internet browser: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

Scroll down and click “Get Transcript Online”. Here is where you can create your user account and also Log In to get your transcripts. See detailed steps below to get familiar with the process before continuing:

 

On the left side of the screen click on the “Create Account” button. On the next screen click “Continue” and follow the prompts to create your IRS account login. You will need access to your e-mail account in order to retrieve the 8-digit confirmation code required to complete registration. If the IRS can’t link your phone number to you for the final activation step, they will mail you a PIN that will be used to activate your account when you log in the first time. The PIN usually arrives in 3-5 days.
